In Funk We Trust Box Buck. Box Dance Party Promotional Ephemera.
No Place: No publisher. Unbound. Good. Item #022880
No publisher or date. Presumed published in San Francisco in the late 1980s, early 1990s. Single sheet, waxy paper stock. Printed on a single side only, in green ink. 5 5/8 by 2 ¾ inches. A promotional coupon good for one dollar off at the Box at 628 Divisadero in San Francisco. The Box was a legendary funk and soul dance party hosted by the influential DJ Page Hodel. It began in 1987 and ran through the early 1990s. It was one of the longest running gay dance parties in San Francisco and was open to all genders and sexual preferences. As Dave, "Davey D" Cook, a teacher of hip hop at San Francisco State University noted in a 2014 SF Gate article of Page Hodel's dance parties and DJ'ing, "In the '80s, if you wanted to hear good hip-hop, you went to where Page and the lesbians were [. ...] Straight people and hip-hop people went to her clubs, because she had respect; she played hard-core things like 2 Live Crew." GOOD condition. It appears this was once torn in half the long way, now repaired rather nicely with what seems to be rice paper tape. Three vertical fold creases present. Minor toning and wrinkling.
