People's Park Outcry. From Occupied Berkeley

Berkeley: No publisher, 1969. Tabloid. Good. Item #022854

Tabloid newspaper format. 8 pp. A newsletter, perhaps the first of at least two issued, published by people associated with the protests at People's Park in Berkeley. The paper includes photos, firsthand accounts and several recaps of the recent (May, 1969) protests in Berkeley about the park. This includes accounts of police brutality and indiscriminate firing into crowds. Not mentioned is the death of protestor James Rector, who was shot by police while on a rooftop. He was shot May 15th and died May 19th. The events of May 15th are documented in this paper, although he is not mentioned by name. Quotes from National Guard members are included, as well as a centerfold illustration depicting people raising a people's park flag Iwo Jima style. The People's Park Protest began in earnest on May 15th, 1969, the culmination of a dispute between UC Berkeley and residents of Berkeley. UC Berkeley owned the vacant lot and residents created a park there, against the university's wishes. When the university tried to remove the occupants protests erupted. Ronald Reagan chose to escalate the violence by dismissing police and National Guard use of lethal force as something to be expected. GOOD condition. Moderate to heavy toning, mostly along the edges.

Price: $200.00
