Los Angeles: African Activists Association, Presumed Publisher, 1985. Unbound. Good. Item #022786

Single sheet, folded into four pages. Glossy paper stock. Roughly 8 ½ by 5 ½ inches. Front cover illustration by Asungi. A promotional brochure for an exhibition of art held in commemoration of Black History Month and International Women's Day from March 4-31, 1985. The exhibition featured work by Asungi, who also curated the event, as well as work by activist Angela Y. Davis, Pamela Boddie, Vera Jackson, Gail Jones and others. A symposium subtitled, "An overview of Black women artists as social critics," was also held. The exhibition took its name from a famous anti-apartheid song that served as the basis for this slogan. Drawing on this inspiration, a multimedia exhibition was created that showcased art by Black women that explored the intersection of racism, Black culture and history, and feminism. Front cover is art by Asungi who's work explores Black, queer and goddess themes, much of it recalling mythical themes from Africa. She founded MAMAROOTS: AJAMA-JEBITM, an "AfraGoddess sistahoood dedicated to Afracentric spirituality and cultural awareness" (quoting Asungi as quoted in Sacred Women of Africa and the African Diaspora: A Womanist Vision, an essay by Arisika Razak). As Razak further notes, Asungi's work idealizes the form of dark-skinned woman, removes it from a male gaze, and counters "negative racially charged stereotypes of Black women." It is not clear what Angela Davis may have contributed to the exhibition. GOOD+ condition. General toning. Minor soiling and edgewear.
