Tabloid newspaper format. 12 pp. A few black and white photos throughout. Single issue of this underground newspaper serving as the voice for the JOIN (Jobs or Income Now) organization in Chicago. JOIN was an organization formed to organize poor white working class people of Chicago, many of them Southerners who had moved to Chicago in search of work and income. As JOIN highlighted in its work, poor whites faced the same economic challenges as the poor Black community, and tied economic inequality to politics and racism, urging a unified front among the various poor communities in Chicago. Instrumental in JOIN was the editor of Firing Line, Peggy Terry, who used her Civil Rights work with CORE to connect Black and white communities to a common cause. This issue with a printing of a speech by Peggy Terry at an SDS conference in Bloomington, Indiana in December, 1967, in which she criticizes the SDS for ignoring the plight of poor and low income people in favor of supporting college students (many from more affluent backgrounds). Also included is a printing of the lyrics to Bob Dylan's 1964 song, Only a Pawn in Their Game, as well as a printing of resolutions of the Southern Caucus of the SDS, among other articles. GOOD condition. Moderate toning. Paper a bit brittle, with a few tears along the edges. Minor wrinkling and creasing.
