Tabloid newspaper format. 6 pp. Black and white photos throughout, including a photo of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Early issue of this newspaper for the Black community of Detroit, published by the East Side Voice of Independent Detroit, an organization led by Frank Ditto. Ditto was a civil rights activist and community leader in the Detroit area. He focused on Black pride, power and Black control of its community, while also working with civic leaders in Detroit. He oversaw the creation of murals and rehab of neighborhoods, and established a "Ghetto Patrol," that walked the streets to deter crime, as well as report on police violence against Black people. This paper was published from 1969 to 1972 and may have had a circulation of a few thousand. Much of the content reported on the actions of ESVID. This issue has a photo essay on a tour of the East Side Detroit, a report on the funeral for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Detroit's Wall of Dignity, etc. GOOD condition. Hinges split about halfway down the paper. Some offsetting and toning to the paper. Minor toning. Faint area of staining to the lower front cover. Faint horizontal fold crease present.
