Freak #13. Vol. III No. 3. 1968
San Francisco: Ahab Press, 1968. Wraps. Good. Item #022733
Side stapled zine format. Approximately 14 by 8 ½ inches. 12 leaves, printed on single sides only. Two leaves printed on blue paper stock. Supposed thirteenth issue of this mimeo style zine, written and created by Tom Hawkins. Hawkins, according to online biographies was essentially an obscure, or failed, Beat writer. He moved to San Francisco to associate with the movement, and began self-publishing Freak and other sorts of oddball publications. Hawkins critiqued and commented on the counterculture scene and figures in San Francisco and elsewhere. In the 1980s he wrote the Wanda Tinasky letters (using that name), which were published in Mendocino Commentary and Anderson Valley Advertiser. Their wry wit and commentary on local luminaries earned a bit of local acclaim, although they were attributed to novelist Thomas Pynchon. Unfortunately Tom Hawkins murdered his wife in 1988, committing suicide a few days later. GOOD condition. Ex-library with a stamp on the front cover. Front cover detached from the lower staple. Some creasing and curling to the cover, with minor soiling.
