Side folding tabloid newspaper format. 24 pp. Black and white photos and illustrations throughout. Early issue of this underground newspaper from the Washington DC area, founded by journalist Bill Blum and others in 1966. Editorially, it embraced radical politics, often in line with the SDS. It covered the resistance to Vietnam War and other Movement issues. This number with interesting layout and typography, blending a steampunk and psychedelic look. With pieces on the massacre of student protestors in Mexico, a report of Black Panther Party member Eldridge Cleaver speaking in Washington, pieces on Nixon, etc. Of particular note is a centerfold poem and illustration by Julian Beck, "Paradise Now," which begins with a subtitle(?) "Let Us Talk About Counter Revolution." Paradise Now was the title of a play/performance piece staged by the Living Theater between 1968 and 1970. Like of experimental works from the Living Theater, the work incorporated the audience into its performance. We are not sure if this was part of any dialogue, or just inspired by the work. Julian Beck was an American artist, poet, actor and cofounder of the influential Living Theater. GOOD condition. Horizontal fold crease present. Moderate toning, a bit heavier along the edges. Light wrinkling, creasing and soiling. Chipping and tearing along the fore edge. Mailing label on the upper front cover.
