Side folding tabloid newspaper format. 40 pp. Black and white photos throughout. Muhammad Speaks was a newspaper published by the Nation of Islam, founded by Elijah Muhammad and providing coverage of current events and news relating to African Americans and the African American community, ranging from international topics to covering the successes of school children in school. Many issues document the Civil Rights struggle, including police brutality and violent examples of white oppression. This issue with an interview with poet Gwendolyn Brooks, as well as a printing of her poem, "Sermon on the Warpland." The poem appeared in her "In the Mecca," collection published in August of 1968, and reflected her growing interest in radical Black poetics and culture. Also present is a piece by Elijah Muhammad; a piece on the grape boycott told from a Black worker's perspective; several pieces highlighting systemic racism in the US justice system, including police violence; news from Africa, news on Vietnam, etc. GOOD condition. Moderate to heavy toning to the paper, with minor chipping and tearing along the extremities.
