State Highway List for 1806 to 1814 (Handwritten). Durham, New Hampshire, Lt. Robert Burnham, Surveyor and Toll Collector. No publisher, place or date. Presumed circa 1806. Side stitched booklet of paper, 7 leaves. Roughly 6 ½ by 4 inches. A handwritten record of the taxes, or tolls, paid by residents of Durham, New Hampshire from the years 1806 to 1814. These were collected by Lieutenant Robert Burnham of Durham, for use of Point Road to Bickford's Ferry. The booklet includes handwritten authorization from Strafford County, explaining duties and rules. This includes allowing labor on maintaining the road to be used in lieu of taxes. The pay rate was set in the booklet. Burnham made use of every blank space on the paper, writing upside down in the lines between older records. The list includes names and taxes paid. It appears Burnham fought in the Revolutionary War. Bickford's Ferry was an important crossing point in Durham, allowing people to cross Little Bay to get to Newington, Portsmouth and elsewhere, prior to the building of the Scammel Bridge. Some names listed include the "wife of Valentine Smith," presumably referring to Judge Valentine Smith; Captain Jonathn Woodman, Captain Mooney; Zebulon York (listed at sea); Thomas Pinkham; Mary Chesley; "Widow" Elizabeth Hanson; Sally Burnham; Abigail Mooney and many others. The names are often accompanied by dates, presumably of passage. GOOD condition. General toning, minor soiling and staining to the paper. Some bumping, minor chipping, scuffing and curling along the edges. Some of the writing illegible due to overwriting.
