Washington, DC: Blair and Rives, Printers, 1836. Quarter Leather. Good. Item #022576

dates vary from 1833 to 1836 and beyond. Quarter leather with marbled boards. Pagination runs 114, 116, 24, 33, 39, 33 pp. A bound volume of various US government documents published by Congress. Of note is a key message by President Andrew Jackson to Congress in which he addresses the nullification crisis arising from South Carolina's refusal to adhere to federal tariff laws. Jackson requested the use of federal troops to enforce the laws if necessary. While the crisis was eventually averted through compromise it did set the precedent for the future Civil War. Also of note is a printing of letters by Henry Morfit, written while in Texas in 1836, describing the war between Texas and Mexico, Texas's fight for independence, its establishment of fortifications, battles, etc. There were ten letters written by Morfit to Jackson. He viewed Texas favorably, but advised against recognizing its independence due to threat of more attacks by Mexico. Other items included are a lengthy look at pensions, the Northeastern boundary of the US, etc. GOOD condition. Slightly ex-library with a bookplate on the inside front cover. No other treatments noted. General fading and minor soiling. Extremities and hinges rather scuffed and worn. Interior solid, with some toning and minor scattered foxing. Handwritten contents to the volume at the front, with a handwritten summary at the rear. A few ownership signatures scattered throughout.
