New York: Grove Press, 1963. First Edition. Cloth. Good / Good. Item #021561

First edition, stated first printing. Black cloth in unclipped jacket. 410 pp. Short typed thank you for the review letter laid in, signed by the author. Debut novel by John Rechy, drawing on his personal experience to chronicle the lives of male hustlers (prostitutes) and the emotions and relationships that form from such liaisons. John Rechy is a Mexican American author whose work often explores aspects of gay life, or experiences as a Mexican American, although usually not both in the same work. Rechy was part of the Cooper Do-Nuts Riot in Los Angeles in 1959, when many in the LGBTQ+ community who hung out at the shop fought back against police after constant harassment from them. GOOD condition. Moderate toning and some soiling to the jacket with some soiling and minor staining. Several small chips and tears along the jacket extremities, especially to the head of the spine. Book faded, with some faded spotting and discoloration. Minor bumping to the corners. A hint of toning to the text block.
