Light brown cloth. 200 pp. A fictional story written to provide a tutorial to the average person on the economic ideas of Adam Smith. It was not anticipated to sell well, but became so popular it was reprinted many times, and Martineau was contracted to write monthly stories for the series. Harriet Martineau was a British author, whose work reflected a variety of topics prevalent in society at that time. She was also noted for being a staunch abolitionist. GOOD condition. Heavy uneven fading and discoloration to the covers, with some spotting, staining and soiling. Extremities bumped, scuffed and a bit worn. Moderate scattered foxing in the interior.
