Dred; A Tale of the Great Dismal Swamp. Two Volumes
Boston: Phillips, Sampson and Company, 1856. First Edition. Cloth. Good. Item #018365
First edition, with ads on the endpapers. Brown cloth decorated in blind. 329, 370 pp. Stowe's second anti-slavery novel, perhaps written to address some criticism of Uncle Tom's Cabin, with the main character Dred being a composite of Black revolutionaries Nat Turner and Denmark Vesey. GOOD condition. Covers faded with minor soiling, uneven discoloration and a few minor stains. Minor scuffing along the extremities. Slight lean to the bindings. Owner's signatures in the interior. Scattered foxing throughout, with heavy toning to some pages. Faint dampstaining in the fore edge and lower margin of volume 1.
