The Independent. March 1, 1883

New York: Henry C. Bowen, Publisher, 1883. Tabloid. Good. Item #018175

Side folding tabloid journal. 32 pp. Disbound from a larger work. The Independent was a long running newspaper that promoted Congregationalism and advocated for abolition and women's suffrage, among other social issues. This issue contains a reply to some previous commentary by D.M. Wilson on the East Tennessee University and its admissions and treatment of African-American students. John F. Spence, the president of the school rebuts many assertions by Wilson, citing policy and finances, and in general asserts the university meets the expectations agreed to. GOOD condition. Three binding holes on the left edge. Paper toned, with some creasing and wrinkling. Small address label on the rear page, that of Elroy M. Avery, perhaps the author and historian. Paper a bit brittle with flaking at the corners. Slight horizontal fold crease present.

Price: $25.00
