History of the Sixteenth New Hampshire Volunteers

Washington, DC: Norman T. Elliott, 1897. Cloth. Good. Item #017545

Brown pebbled cloth. 574 pp. Black and white photo portraits throughout. A history of the actions of the Sixteenth New Hampshire Volunteers during the Civil War, including Baton Rouge and Brashear City, capture of Fort Burton, Port Hudson, etc. In the discussion of Port Hudson, brief reference is made to an African-American regiment and the bravery of a Black sergeant, including an illustration of a battle in which the sergeant had participated. Both illustration and text appear slightly condescending and draw on caricature rather than reality. GOOD condition. Ex-library with spine label, pocket, pastedown and a few interior markings. Minor fading and rubbing to the covers. Text block toned. Letter from the publisher tipped in on the first endpaper.
