No wrappers, if issued. 32 pp. The Independent was a long running newspaper that promoted Congregationalism and advocated for abolition and women's suffrage, among other social issues. This issue with a piece by Henry James, "Florentine Notes," providing some thoughts on his travels in Italy. This essay, along with others, would eventually be published in 1909 in the collection "Italian Hours." Also present is poem by Joaquin Miller, "In Africa." Various articles on religion, politics, news, etc., also present. GOOD condition. Three heavy horizontal fold creases present. Minor soiling and toning to the paper.
