The Phoenix. Autumn, 1940. Volume II No. 4.

Woodstock, NY: Maverick Press, 1940. Wraps. Good. Item #013896
ISBN: noisbn

Black wraps with a yellow and orange illustration of a phoenix on the front cover. Titling in red. 127 pp. A single issue of this hand set, hand bound and hand printed little magazine, inspired by the work of D.H. Lawrence and seeking to carry on his ideas in writing. The magazine had an anti-mechanical or industrial editorial slant, and was against World War II, seeing it as a product of the machine age (see Hoffman, The Little Magazine, pp. 184-186). This issue with a posthumously published piece by D.H. Lawrence "The Nightmare," as well as work by Jean Giono, Robert Symmes and others. GOOD condition. Wrappers rather curled, creased and faded, with minor soiling. Some faint dampstaining to the endpapers, with some darkish color transfer from the covers. Faint dampstaining along the fore edge margins of the pages scattered throughout.

Price: $55.00
