Illustrated wrappers with angel illustration in gilt. Black and white illustrations throughout. Single issue of this magazine devoted to literature, history and other topics. This issue with many pieces relating to Christmas. Of note is part II of "The Naulahka" by Rudyard Kipling, as well as letters written by William Tecumseh Sherman on the San Francisco Vigilantes. These letters relate to the 1856 Vigilance Committee and its actions, which caused the government to seek to send the California state militia into San Francisco to restore order. Sherman was to lead the militia, but resigned due to conflicting interests. GOOD condition. Moderate toning, minor soiling, wrinkling and edgewear, including several small chips and tears. A few small spots of staining to the covers.
