Full calf leather with gilt ornamentation on the spines. Books measure approximately 11 ½ by 9 inches. (12), 601; ccix, lxxxviii, cl pages between the two volumes. 14 fold out maps/plates in volume one (including frontispiece portrait). All text in French. A two volume work, including letters, etc., on the life of Henri de La Tour d'Auvergne, vicomte de Turenne, a French general noted for his military prowess, leading many to consider him one of the greatest modern generals. He served during the Thirty Years' War, as well as the Eighty Years' War and against Spanish forces, among other battles and skirmishes. Ramsay, a Scottish born writer, lived primarily in France, and wrote this work for the education of the Prince of Turenne, Godefroi Charles. GOOD condition. Library type academy stamp on the title pages, with no other institutional type markings found on the interior or exterior. Moderate to heavy scuffing to the leather, with several larger, deeper scuff marks and superficial loss of leather to the covers. Uneven fading and toning. Minor soiling and a few small stains to the covers. Leather worn and scuffed along the extremities. A few small numerical notations to the endpapers. Endpapers stained and worn, with minor damage along the extremities, including some tearing and loss. Minor scattered foxing and soiling in the interiors. Previous owner's armorial bookplates in each volume, that of Johann Georg Von Honstedt.
