Full leather. Illustrated frontispiece. (16) 491, ccc5-ggg4. All text in Latin. A edition of various works by Macrobius, including his "Commentary on the Dream of Scipio" discussing Platonism; and Saturnalia, consisting of dialogue involving twelve main characters who espouse various beliefs and philosophies. Macrobius had hoped to put his learning and reading at the disposal of his son, to provide useful information. Much of the historical information on various societies and cultures provided in Saturnalia had not been preserved elsewhere. GOOD condition. Covers split along the hinges, very tenuously holding on to the binding. Old cloth tape repair to the head of the spine. Leather cracking and flaking along the hinges and spine. Some scuffing and bumping along the extremities. Leather peeling back at the rear corner near the head of the spine. Bookplate present. Sporadic dampstaining present, intermittently affecting the lower corner and fore edge of pages throughout. Smallish hole in the first endpaper.
