A printing of two 19th century plays featuring the fictional character Robert Macaire. Originally written as a character in a melodrama in the play L'Auberge des Adrets, the character of Macaire was transformed by the actor playing him into an archetypical con man that represented scandals in government, politics and high society in France. Due to the scandalous nature of the character, it was banned from being used in plays in 19th century France, with people charged with crimes for its portrayal (see Wikipedia).
