Through a detailed examination of his sketchbooks and other primary sources, this work traces his evolution as an artist, as well as his contribution to the evolution of art in America. VERY GOOD condition. Minor rubbing, fading and edgewear to the jacket, with light curling along the extremities. Minor fading to the book. Lengthy gift inscription on the first endpaper. Small faded area/staining to the inside front cover underneath the jacket flap.
