London: Jennings and Chaplin; Printed for Rodwell and Martin. Full Leather. Good. Item #009604
Jennings and Chaplin. London: 1832. With the single volume Printed for Rodwell and Martin. London: 1817-1819. Red leather with gilt ornamentation on the spines. xxiv, 198, 207; Xxxi, 273 pp. Black and white plates and vignettes throughout, as well as one in color (in the 2 in 1 book). These are all present as called for. The one volume 1819 edition contains many black and white plates and maps, with severe misnumbering, duplicate numbering or no numbers from plate 30 on, making collation very difficult, and impossible to say if all plates are there. One in color in this book. Two volumes bound as one gathering the 1832 edition in one book, with a separate book, bound the same, presenting the presumed 1819 edition of Pompeiana. A work discussing the archaeological findings at Pompeii, examining the lay out of the city and buildings, as well as architecture, art and other aspects of the city. With three armorial bookplates: one from Sir Robert Peel mentioning Drayton Manor; one from Wickham Noakes; and one, in the rear, from Everett E. Whitney. GOOD condition. Deep scuff and superficial peeling to a 2 ½ by ½ inch section of the front cover of the 1832 book, with otherwise minor general scuffing, uneven fading, darkening and minor soiling to both books. Leather very scuffed and worn along the hinges, with darkening and minor cracking to the spines. Front hinge split along the upper 1/3 of the 1817-1819 volume. Scattered foxing throughout each, affecting the plates.
