London: Printed for Lawton Gilliver, 1729. Leather. Good. Item #009362
Stated second edition. Full calf leather. 232, 6 pp. A book length satirical poem, lampooning and critiquing various 'dunces' in English literature and society, as anointed by Alexander Pope. This work, drawing on the structure of various classical poems, documents mistakes and other perceived errors in the work of several men of English letters, most notably the work of Lewis Theobald, of whom the main character was modeled on, and whose own work on Shakespeare cast aspersions on the Shakespearian work of Pope. GOOD condition. Heavy scuffing to the leather, with the extremities very bumped, scuffed and worn. Leather split and fraying along the hinges, with the covers rather weakly attached. Heavy chipping, flaking and wear to the leather on the spine. Very minor scattered soiling and foxing in the interior.
