A lengthy history of the institution of marriage, especially as observed and carried out by the church. This includes a study of the beliefs and philosophy behind the marriage ritual, examining its evolution throughout the centuries. Also present is a section on divorce and the dissolution of marriage. Jean-Pierre Gibert was a French lawyer of canon and ecclesiastical law. GOOD condition, ex-theological library. Spine labels, bookplates and minor library notations in the interiors. Moderate uneven fading and scuffing to the covers, including some small areas of loss to the leather. Leather split, cracked and separating along the length of the hinges of each volume. Corners worn through, with some pulling and tearing at the heads of the spines. Several small areas of darkening and staining present to the covers. Interiors solid with scattered minor foxing throughout. Minor dampstaining to the lower margin of volume one. Faint ink staining to the endpapers.
