Side folding newspaper, with a single center horizontal fold, believed as issued. 14 ½ by 11 inches. 40 pages. With a few illustrations and black and white photos throughout. As the masthead states, this underground newspaper is 'our experiment to present art in different, more effective, perhaps more appropriate context-art as news. Not news of the arts but art functioning as news.' To that effect, this issue, the first, contains poetry, short drama, stories and essays reflecting on war, politics, literature, sex, women's issues, etc. This includes a poem, 'Devise Punishment fit for the Queen,' by Tuli Kupferberg, as well as a lengthy interview with James T. Farrell, an American novelist noted for his work 'Studs Lonigan,' and his membership in Socialist Workers Party and other left leaning affiliations. Also tackled within is a definition of underground newspapers and the 'alternative' offered by them. GOOD+ condition. Moderate to heavy browning to the paper. Minor chipping and tearing along the extremities, mostly along the left (spine) edge.
