First edition. Original cloth hard covers. xl 469, 553 pages. Top edges gilt. With a large fold out map present in volume 1. Two plates present in volume two, with an illustration of autographs in volume 1 and another illustration in volume 2. An extensive account of the practice of witchcraft in Salem, Massachusetts, as well as the persecution of the witches. Also provided is a lengthy history of witchcraft from ancient to the then present times, as well as a history of Salem, MA. In GOOD condition. General fading to the covers, with minor staining to both volumes, as well as minor soiling. Extremities bumped and scuffed, with the spine head and feet pulled and rather frayed. Lower corner of volume 2 frayed. Cloth with a 3 inch split along the rear hinge of volume 2. Both volumes solid, with sporadic pencil lines in the margins and text of a few passages. Some notes/names in pencil on the rear inside covers. Former owner's bookplate present. General toning to the pages.
