Also published in Leipsic (Leipzig) by Tauchnitz. Believed first edition with the date on the title page a year later than on the copyright page, as Carleton has been noted to do. 407 pages. LACKING THE FRONTIS PORTRAIT. A novel chronicling the life of a banker. Bound in half leather with marbled boards. In POOR condition. Heavy scuffing to the covers and extremities, with several notable sections along the extremities having been scuffed through to the boards. General fading and some soiling to the covers. Extremities bumped and worn. Head and foot of the leather spine pulled, with a 1 inch square piece missing from the foot, as well as a small section along the head. Leather cracked along the exterior hinges. Front and rear pastedown scuffed and worn. Previous owner's signatures present on the endpapers. Moderate foxing and darkening throughout, with some minor sporadic soiling and several large dog ear creases present. The upper corner of the last two blank endpapers torn off in a jagged manner.
