Each volume consists of four pages (one leaf 8 by 11 paper folded in half and printed on all sides.) with a cover illustration (engraving). Complete without covers or wrappers, as issued. Issued quarterly in London from 1816 to 1832 by the Church Missionary Society (of Anglican denomination) and published by L.B. Seeley. Many of these papers were apparently anthologized in 1849. Individual descriptions as follows. Volume number XIII. Lady Day, 1819. With two engravings, one interior, one exterior, of a native school at Lakoody, near Burdwan in India. A map of the world is on the second page. This volume describes areas around the world where missionaries were at work, including work with freed enslaved persons in Africa, work in South America, India, etc. In GOOD condition with some soiling and darkening, especially along the extremities. Some rubbing and edgewear. Light foxing. Volume number XIV. Midsummer, 1819. With a large engraving of Ganesa, the Hindoo [sic] diety. This volume describes “some account of the worship which they pay him, and of the silly notions which they have concerning him.” Also discussed is education in India as well as prayer meetings in Sierra Leone, Africa. In GOOD condition with some soiling and darkening, especially along the extremities. Some rubbing and edgewear. Light foxing. Volume XXII. Midummer 1821. With a full cover illustration of Krishna suffering and Krishna triumphant. This volume gives page discussion of the gods Vishnoo [sic] and Krishna, as well as an account of the progress of funding the church. In GOOD condition with some soiling and darkening, especially along the extremities. Some rubbing, small tearing and edgewear. Light foxing. Volume XXIII. Michaelmas, 1821. With a full page illustration of Siva and his wife Parvati. This volume offers a description of Siva, as well as the self torture practiced by his worshipers. In GOOD condition with some soiling and darkening, especially along the extremities. Heavy chipping along the upper edge with some paper loss to the top margin. Light foxing. Volume XXVI. Midsummer, 1822. Full page illustration of a preparation for burning a hindoo widow. This volume gives an accounting of cruelties connected with Hindoo superstitions as well as thoughts for English villagers about missions to the heathen. In POOR condition. Split in half along the fold. With some soiling and darkening, especially along the extremities. Some rubbing and edgewear. Light foxing. Volume XXXVI. Christmas, 1824. Full page illustration of the temple of Juggernaut in Orissa, on the Bay of Bengal. An account of the temple, worship and festivals held in honor of Juggernaut. In GOOD condition with some soiling and darkening, especially along the extremities. Some rubbing and edgewear. Light foxing. Beginning to split along the fold, in the center. Volume XLII. Midsummer 1826. With a full page illustration of Tooi, a late chief in New Zealand. An account of missionary work in New Zealand, as it related to Tooi. In GOOD condition with some soiling and darkening, especially along the extremities. Some rubbing and edgewear. Light foxing. Volume LIII. Lady Day, 1829. With a full page illustration of a Druid’s altar in Cornwall. An accounting of the beliefs and history of the Druids and their impact on other countries in history. In POOR condition with some soiling and darkening, especially along the extremities. This volume was once folded in half horizontally and has begun to tear along the crease. There is faint pencil writing at the bottom of the front page Some rubbing and edgewear. Light foxing. Overall an interesting assorted collection of pamphlets relating the history of missionary work in India, Africa and New Zealand, as well as offering their perspective on the religious practices of the various natives they encountered.
