Full tree calf leather. xx, 197 pp. Volume 1 ONLY. Drawn from Greek, Roman, Spanish, Italian, German and Eastern books, this work presents a selection of jokes and jests from various countries, both for amusement and education. Preceded by an introduction discussing the sources of the jests, as well as tastes in various countries (asserting most of the jokes from Germany were dull). Compiled by John Pinkerton, a Scottish scholar, cartographer and numismatist. POOR/FAIR condition. Both covers DETACHED. Heavy scuffing to the leather along the extremities. Spine flaking, chipped and worn. General darkening. Several owner's notations and names in the front, with an old bookseller catalog description glued in on an endpaper. Scattered foxing throughout. A few stray pencil lines in the text.

A bound volume of German humorous literature and satire, including Buntes Berlin by Adolf Glassbrenner, a German humorist and satirist. FAIR/GOOD condition. Leather backstrip mostly DETACHED from the spine, with heavy chipping, flaking and loss. Extremities bumped and worn. Scattered foxing and spotting in the interior. Discard stamped on the rear endpaper.

Boards with cloth binding. Un-paginated. A collection of black and white comic strip cartoons reflecting, humorously, on life in the army during World War I, many featuring a Private Dubb. Some of these may have appeared in McClure newspapers in 1917 (based on copyright notices in some of the strips). GOOD+ condition with moderate to heavy darkening to the boards, heaviest along the spine. Some soiling, scuffing and minor staining to the boards. Extremities bumped and scuffed with the corners worn. Front hinge starting, with the rear hinge weakened. Text block clean and solid with general toning to the paper. A front endpaper appears to be missing.

No publisher, place or date, perhaps circa 1882. Paper covered boards, illustrated, with leather spine and corners. Rear cover bears ads. Oblong folio. 24 leaves, printed on single sides only. A collection of various humorous and satirical cartoons and sketches on different subjects, by George Cruikshank. These span the dates 1828-1832. OCLC records indicate "Originally published by Cruikshank and followed by 'many different printings ... an attempt [by] the artist to become his own publisher and thus derive continued royalties by reissuing earlier works' (cf. Richard A. Vogeler. Graphic works of George Cruikshank, p. 142). Originally appeared in 4 parts, in 1828, 1829, 1831 and 1832." George Cruikshank was an English illustrator, known for his caricatures of English subjects and social life, as well as his illustrations for the work of Charles Dickens. GOOD condition. Heavy uneven toning and darkening to the covers, with some soiling and minor stains. Heavy bumping and scuffing along the extremities, with flaking and loss to the leather. Mostly minor scattered foxing and soiling in the interior.

no date, presumed 1930s. Brown paper covered boards with a small pastedown illustration on the front cover. 32 pp. Illustrations throughout. A collection of poetic, humorous monologues written by Marriott Edgar, and performed by Stanley Holloway and Edgar. This includes the popular 'The lion and Albert,' among others. Most of these epitomize British humor popular in the early to mid 20th century, reflecting popular culture, etc. GOOD condition. Some bowing to the boards. Minor soiling, darkening and discoloration to the covers. Some wrinkling to the paper covering the boards. Interior clean and solid.

Wraps faded. Heavy scuffing to the extremities and hinges, with some curling and creasing to the corners. A few small tears present along the edges and spine tips. Very light soiling. Moderate to heavy browning to the paper in the interior.

Small folio, roughly 8 1/2 by 11 inches. 48 pp. With black and white illustrations throughout, as well as one page of photos of women posing in bathing suits. A humor magazine, featuring cartoons throughout reflecting mostly on men and women and relationships, with some humor slightly risque. The section following page 21 (Camp Ha Ha!) contains humor for soldiers. GOOD condition. Creasing to the upper front corner, with some creasing along the spine. Minor fading, toning and soiling to the wraps. Interior clean and solid with general toning.

Presumed 1860's facsimile edition, with title page reading: 'Printed and Sold by T. Read, in Dogwell Court. London: 1739.' Red paper covered boards with a green leather spine. 70 pp. 247 entries. A collection of witticisms, some perhaps considered a bit coarse or racy when originally written, assembling both classic jokes and ones contemporary to the publishing time period. Only three are attributed to Joe Miller (Encyclopedia Britannica). Joe Miller was an English actor, whose name, due to the popularity of this work, is referred to in various classics of literature, including Dickens' "A Christmas Carol," and Joyce's "Ulysses." GOOD+ condition. Moderate scuffing and fading to the book. Minor soiling and spotting to the covers. Extremities scuffed and worn. Minor pencil jottings to the verso of the front endpaper. Light scattered staining in the interior.
