A detailed account of Bonvalot's 1889 expedition exploring and traveling through parts of China, Tibet and Lhasa, some of which had been previously unexplored by Europeans. This includes accounts of people and customs he encountered, as well a discussion of the land, etc. Gabriel Bonvalot was a French explorer, primarily traveling through central Asia and Tibet. GOOD condition. Lacking the map. Moderate to heavy fading to the covers. Some staining along the bottom edges, with areas of faint discoloration. Minor soiling. Moderate to heavy scuffing and bumping to the extremities. Cloth frayed at the spine tips. Endpapers foxed. Minor scattered soiling/staining in the interior.

Xxiv, 327; xxii, 388 pp. With many full page and small illustrations throughout. A detailed description of Egypt, chronicling its ancient history and civilization, as well as its then recent history. Also included are descriptions of Cairo and Alexandria, both in antiquity and then present day, as well as accounts of ruins, tombs, etc. Georg Ebers was a noted German Egyptologist, noted for his discovery of the Ebers Papyrus, an ancient Egyptian medical text, as well as for his nonfiction and fiction that sought to popularize Egypt and its history. GOOD+ condition. Minor fading to the covers. Minor to moderate scuffing, heaviest along the extremities, corners and spine. Volume two with rather heavy scuffing/wear at the center fore edges, with the cloth starting to wear through. Both spines very faded. Interiors solid. Minor soiling to the preliminaries of volume 2.

Wilfred Grenfell led medical missionary expeditions to Newfoundland and Labrador in an effort to help the fishermen and fishing settlements, eventually expanding his work to include the native population, and establishing orphanages, schools, etc. VERY GOOD condition. Minor soiling and edgewear to the book. Magazine photo of Grenfell tipped in to the first endpaper.

Marbled boards with leather binding, covered in gray/blue paper. 596 pp, plus 8 pages of index. Most likely from the collection of George Peabody, as this was purchased in a lot of others, some of which bear his signature. Containing the Peabody Institute bookplate on the inside front cover, which also states, Presented by George Peabody. George Peabody (1795-1869) is considered one of the first modern philanthropists, establishing trusts to help the poor, as well as founding the Peabody Institute. He gained much of his fortune from banking, eventually partnering with Junius Spencer Morgan, father of J.P. Morgan. Edited and published by Ralph Griffiths, the Monthly Review published works of criticism on many authors and books, providing bibliographic and historical information on many topics. Of note in this volume are several articles and extracts on topics such as advantages of a settlement on the Ohio; a poem titled The Dying Negro which takes a slave as its subject and is abolitionist in tone (a extract of the poem is printed), an apology for General Braddock's conduct in America, a brief look at the Cherokee Indians, an account of Captain Cook's voyages in the Southern Hemisphere (from Hawkesworth's Accounts) and many items on religious, scientific, literary and philosophical subjects. EX-LIBRARY, from the Peabody Institute. In POOR condition with the boards covered by dull blue paper glued to the inside cover. This paper bears library shelving info on the spine. The paper bears some soiling, fading and scuffing. Aforementioned bookplate present. Library ownership stamp and call numbers on the title pages. Small circular library stamp on one page in the text. Minor scattered foxing and soiling, a bit heavier to the title page. Front and rear covers DETACHED from the binding, as well as the first pages up to and including the title page.

Basil Hall was a noted British naval officer, authoring many books on exploration and travel, drawn from his extensive journals. GOOD condition Leather chipped and torn at the head of the spine. with a 1/4 inch piece almost completely detached. Moderate to heavy scuffing along the extremities, mostly affecting the leather. Minor scuffing and fading to the boards. Interior clean and solid with offsetting to the endpapers.
