2 Flower, Dr. R.C. Youth, Health and Happiness
Boston Dr. R.C. Flower, presumed Publisher no Original Wraps Fair
no date, but believed circa 1890's to early 1900's. Printed wraps. 57 pages with a photo of Dr. R.C. Flower and A.H. Flower. A self-published work discussing the keys to health and happiness, asserting that most diseases and problems can be cured through the use of the mind but also advocating proper sleep and nutrition. Flower also advertises for his services as a metaphysical healer, using "Christian science" to treat his patients. Many pages of testimonials from the press, individuals and other sources are included, as well as an interview with Flower. Richard C. Flower advertised as a clairvoyant and hypnotic healer, establishing a business in Boston, Massachusetts selling patent medicines. He also was involved in various mining interests, paying dividends to his investors from sale of stock. It appears Flowers was involved in many schemes surrounding medicinal practices and other pursuits, and was arrested several times, jumping bail and assuming disguises to avoid authorities in Canada, the United States, Mexico and South America. He served a little time in 1914, eventually dying in 1916. Some of his hypnotic healing and belief in the mental origin of disease may have been inspired by Mary Baker Eddy, also in Boston at the same time as Flower (information from An Annotated Catalogue of the Edward C. Atwater Collection of American Popular Medicine and Health Reform). FAIR/GOOD condition. LACKING rear wrap, with front wrap DETACHED but present. Heavy chipping and tearing to the front wrapper extremities, with loss to the lower corners. Minor soiling and fading to the wrap. The booklet is solid with a faint dampstain affecting the lower left portion of the first 6 pages. Slight curling/creasing to the upper right corner.

8 Wilmans, Helen The Conquest of Poverty
Seabreeze, FL Wilman's Publishing House 1901 no Wraps Good
Stated 63rd thousand. Printed wraps. 185 pp., plus ads in the rear. With a black and white photo of the author's home. Front and rear wrap indicate Dawson's Bookshop of Los Angeles published this edition, with the interior bearing the above cited bibliographical information. A work advocating and discussing the use of Mental Science to get oneself out of poverty, drawing from the author's own personal life, as well as from her philosophy and practice of mental science. This includes a discussion of the conscious plane as well as though transference, and in general appears to parallel many of the beliefs associated with New Thought, of which Wilmans was a practitioner and teacher. Helen Wilmans was a 19th/early 20th century teacher and author, being a vocal advocate for mental science and New Thought. Her husband, Colonel C.C. Post bought land in 1892 in Florida, eventually establishing what would become known as the community of Seabreeze, and in which Wilmans established a school for mental science. Her influence in the movement eventually waned, partially due to mail fraud charges brought against her. GOOD condition. Some staining and dampstaining to the wrappers, with mostly minor soiling, some dark scuffing and general uneven darkening to the wraps. Upper right corner of the cover clipped along the diagonal, with a chip missing from the lower left front cover. A few other minor chips, tears and creases present along the extremities. Interior solid with minor toning to the paper. Faint dampstain along the top edge. Small brown stain to the lower center of the first few pages.
