Presumed late 1800s. 116 pp. A work considering singing as applied to the voice of a child, containing chapters on the cultivation of a child's voice in relation to health, the age that a child should learn singing, comparison of a girl's voice to that of a woman, causes of the change of voice in males and females, the question of boys' or girls' singing during puberty, results of boys' singing during puberty, singing from an instructor's point of view, etc. Emil Behnke was a singing teacher, as well as a lecturer on vocal physiology, being the first to photo the larynx in action, around 1870 (Judith Duchan website associated with the University at Buffalo). GOOD+ condition. A few minor scratches and superficial punctures to the cloth on the rear cover. Minor rubbing and fading. Light fraying and pulling at the spine tips. Previous owner's signature present on the first endpaper. Minor toning to the paper.

Cardboard stock covers in brown printed paper wraps (adhered to the covers). Folio. 173 pp. With a section of 28 photo plates. With another gift inscription present from Craig (Timberlake, an American stage actor). A privately issued work commemorating the 1922 production of the Merchant of Venice, providing Belasco's commentary on the play, the cast of characters, photo plates, and tributes. David Belasco was an American theatrical producer, as well as a playwright and director. He was influential in American stage design, and used emerging technology to create state of the art theaters in New York (see Wikipedia). GOOD condition. Moderate to heavy chipping and minor tearing along the extremities, with some small areas of loss. Spine chipped and worn at the extremities. A two inch split along the upper front hinge. Minor soiling and general toning. Text solid, with minor toning.

Decorative color half title present (or perhaps an original front wrap). 81 pp. The musical score and lyrics to La Navarraise, an opera based on a short story 'La Cigarette' by Jules Claretie, and set in Spain during the Carlist War of 1874. The libretto was written by Clariete and Henri Cain, with the music written by the noted 19th century French composer, Jules Massenet. The opera was first performed in London in 1894. GOOD condition. Spine and hinges reinforced along the exterior with black binding tape, a bit heavy-handedly. General fading, with minor to moderate uneven soiling to the covers. A few small dark ink stains/streaks to the front cover. Minor scuffing and edgewear. Interior hinges reinforced with tape. Several oval ownership/bookseller stamps on the first few endpapers and title page. Text block solid and toned.

He was known for his playing of chamber music, as well as teaching that the violinist should be considered an artist (Wikipedia). GOOD condition. SIGNED, with a short dedication by Edwin Booth Grossman on the first endpaper, with the signature of Edwin Booth, on a small clipped piece of paper, glued to the inside front cover. While no provenance can be provided for this book, the Edwin Booth signature does match various online images found of his signature. This book is from the estate of Craig Timberlake, an American stage actor and musician. Primarily a collection of letters by Edwin Booth to his daughter and others, providing insight into his daily life, as well as musings on various topics. With a short section by Edwina Booth Grossmann reminiscing about her father. Edwin Booth was a famous 19th century American actor noted for his Shakespearian roles, as well as his founding of the Player's Club. He was also the brother of John Wilkes Booth. GOOD+ condition. Offsetting and moderate fading to the rear cover, with some fading and faint offsetting to the front. Spine rather faded. Minor scuffing and edgewear. Minor foxing to the endpapers.

A collection of essays on the art of singing including voice production and placing, breath control, phrasing, diction and tone color, as well as interpretive keys to Handel's 'Messiah; and Schubert's 'Die Schone Mullerin.' Max Heinrich was a 19th/early 20th century German born singer who moved to the United States in the 1870s. He performed throughout the United States, and eventually became a teacher at the Royal Academy of Music in London. GOOD condition. Minor soiling. Moderate fading, mostly along the extremities. Some scuffing, heaviest to the extremities, with some fraying to the cloth. Spine rather faded. Previous owner's bookplate present. Text block toned.

This copy bearing handwritten notes by a student of Joseffy's, (Vera Murray-Covert [sp.?]), giving the different addresses where he lived (in New York) during the time she studied with him. With the ownership signature of Craig Timberlake also present, a noted American theater actor and musician. Rafael Joseffy was a Hungarian pianist, performing primarily in the 19th century, and moving to New York in 1879, where he eventually stopped giving concerts and focused on teaching (Wikipedia). GOOD condition. Light soiling, scuffing and fading, with some faint spotting and discoloration to the rear cover. Extremities a bit scuffed and frayed. Interior clean and solid.

Joonas Kokkonen was a 20th century Finnish composer who composed chamber music as well as several symphonies. GOOD condition. Covers curling along the fore edge. Minor scuffing and edgewear. Small price sticker on the rear cover. Some toning to the paper, with very minor foxing to the upper corners of a few pages. A few leaves from the Met Opera House performance laid in.

All other illustrations present as called for, with the frontis illustrations in volumes 1 and 2 bound in a bit further on. A collection of short anecdotes reflecting on the history or theater, commenting on notable actors, playwrights, plays, performances, etc., from ancient to the then present. With commentary on Shakespeare, brief mention of American theater, Harry Rowe, John Palmer, a riot at the Haymarket Theater, Chinese play, customs of the French theater, Charlotte Cibber, etc. GOOD condition, lacking the aforementioned plates. Leather rather scuffed along the hinges, with minor scuffing along the extremities and to the covers. Minor fading. Blue decorative wraps with a rectangular cut out exposing the color illustration of a dancer beneath. Small folio. Unpaginated. Most text in French. A primarily pictorial revue of dancers associated with the cabaret dance hall in Paris, the Folies Bergere. At this time period Paul Derval ran the hall, and was known for staging performances in which women wore little clothing, often performing partially nude or completely nude. As such, this work features photos of dancers sometimes topless or completely nude, often accompanied by their names. Dancers included in this issue are Betty Campson, Margot Brechtel, Tania Visirova, Georgia Graves and others. A photograph of a woman is laid in at the rear, although it appears this is a reproduction of an original. GOOD condition. Heavy chipping, tearing and scuffing along the spine, with some creasing, chipping and loss at the corners. Covers scuffed, a bit soiled and faded. Some toning and wrinkling in the interior.
