Half leather with brown pebbled cloth. 'Includes Aspects of Culture,' by Ralph Waldo Emerson; 'George Silverman's Explanation I,II,III,' by Charles Dickens; 'Hawthorne in the Boston Custom-House,' by Nathaniel Hawthorne; 'Our Second Girl,' by Harriet Beecher Stowe; poetry by Celia Thaxter and Oliver Wendell Holmes and other pieces of literature and poems. Also of note is an essay on the discovery of etherization: the use of anasthesia on patients of various medical procedures. GOOD condition, slightly ex-library, with a circular embossment on the title page. No other treatments found. General fading and minor soiling to the covers. Heavy scuffs, superficial chips to the leather at the near the head of the spine and along the upper hinges. Leather rather scuffed along the raised bands. Previous owner's initials and last named embossed in gilt at the foot of the spine. Interior solid, with uneven toning to the paper. Scattered foxing throughout, ranging from minor to heavy.

With black and white illustrations throughout. A magazine featuring various articles on travel, art, literature, etc. Of note in this issue is a collection of letters written by Edgar Allan Poe while in Philadelphia. This also includes letters from Charles Dickens, as well letters to Longfellow and others. Also of note in this issue is a piece by Jacob A. Riis advocating for playgrounds at schools. In GOOD+ condition. Minor to moderate browning to the wraps, heavier along the extremities. Minor soiling. Minor chipping and tearing along the extremities, with light creasing to the wraps. Previous owner's small label on the center front cover, with the last name in ink at the upper front cover. Light browning to the interior.

Newspaper, original wraps. 4pp. Side folding newspaper, featuring "Two Scenes in the life of John Bodger," by Charles Dickens, several articles on slavery and the fugitive slave act, an article on the commissioner of the Sandwich Islands (Hawaii), etc. In GOOD condition with heavy chipping and tearing along the side fold, resulting in the hinge being very weak. It appears this newspaper may have been disbound from a larger volume. A few minor fold creases present, with minor general darkening and very minor soiling.
