A detailed catalog of paintings from China from the Sung and Yuan dynasties. This includes histories, critical examinations and analyses of landscape paintings of the Five Dynasties (907-60) and the Northern Sung (960-1127); figure paintings of the Sung Dynasty (960-1279); album leaves of the Southern Sung Dynasty ((1127-1279); figure paintings of the Yuan Dynasty (1279-1368); landscape paintings of the early and late Yuan periods, etc. VERY GOOD book in a GOOD slipcase. Uneven fading to the cloth. Minor bumping along the extremities. Interior clean and solid. The slipcase is rather faded and scuffed, especially along the extremities. Some splitting and chipping along the edges. Upper edge with tape repairs along some longer splits affecting the top.

A detailed account of Bonvalot's 1889 expedition exploring and traveling through parts of China, Tibet and Lhasa, some of which had been previously unexplored by Europeans. This includes accounts of people and customs he encountered, as well a discussion of the land, etc. Gabriel Bonvalot was a French explorer, primarily traveling through central Asia and Tibet. GOOD condition. Lacking the map. Moderate to heavy fading to the covers. Some staining along the bottom edges, with areas of faint discoloration. Minor soiling. Moderate to heavy scuffing and bumping to the extremities. Cloth frayed at the spine tips. Endpapers foxed. Minor scattered soiling/staining in the interior.

12 Fukuchi Epitome of the Historical Drama, "Kasuga-No-Tsubone" (written by Mr. Fukuchi) and other plays performed by Danjuro and his Troupe, at the Kabukiza Theatre May, 1903
Kobiki-Cho, Tokyo Kabukiza Theatre, presumed Publisher no Wraps Fair 
no date, perhaps 1903. Printed wraps. 9 pages. Page 8 blank, with Japanese characters on the last page. Otherwise all text in English. A summary of scenes and acts, with a little printed dialogue of several plays performed at the Kabuki-za Theatre in Tokyo in 1903. This includes Kasuga-No-Tsubone, Suo-Otoshi and Onna-Date Komagata Osen. These were apparently performed by Ichikawa Danjuro IX, a noted Kabuki actor of the Meiji Period, and considered a key factor in the continued popularity of Kabuki theater at that time (see Wikipedia). May, 1903 was Danjuro's last performance (he died in September of that year). The Kabuki-za Theatre was built in 1889 and rebuilt in 1921, continuing the Kabuki theater to the present. It was founded by Fukuchi Gen'ichiro, who wrote many of the plays that featured Danjuro (Wikipedia). FAIR condition. Moderate chipping, tearing and loss along the extremities, including what appears to be some nibbling at the lower right corner. Horizontal fold crease present. Heavy browning to the paper, which is rather brittle.

A reprint of the 1704 London and 1732 Paris edition of this work by Hendrik Hamel, reproducing the text from the original. A account of the shipwreck and subsequent travels of Hendrik Hamel, a Dutch sailor. Hamel provides one of the first European accounts of Korea from firsthand observations, chronicling a nation that up until that point was little known to Europeans. With an historical introduction by Frederic Max, as well as commentary in the margins of the text itself, elucidating on names or other points of history. VERY GOOD condition. Minor fading, mostly to the spine. Light edgewear. Interior clean and solid.

no date, presumed circa 1928 based on OCLC records, although this imprint not listed. Beige cloth. No jacket. 243 pp. With a few black and white photos throughout, as well as two maps, all present as called for. An account of the outbreak of the Chinese Civil War, including fighting in Nanking (Nanjing). The author, wife of an American businessman, who had lived in interior China for close to twenty years, recalls the lives of both the average Chinese citizen and the hardships endured, as well as the anti-foreign sentiment they faced. This includes an account of fighting between Chinese soldiers and several US and British consul officials under 'siege' in a house, saved by the bombs from warships. Alice Tisdale Hobart was an American novelist, perhaps best known for her work 'Oil Lamps for China.' GOOD+ condition. Minor soiling and uneven fading to the covers, with minor scuffing. Spine rather darkened, with a few lighter flecks. Cloth at the head and tail frayed. Interior clean and solid with very light toning.

The author also examines the Japanese assertions (in the 19th century) that part of southern Korea was a colony in earlier history, debunking this claim as an invader's justification for invading.
